Brief History

Named after Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, one of the most prominent and dynamic Prime Ministers of India, the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute was conceived and later found its germination and edifice in 1968 through a mutual proclamation of the governments of Canada and India. This idea of establishing an institute of repute to promote and facilitate scholarly and academic activity between Canada and India was first contemplated by Dr. Michael Brecher, a professor of political science at McGill University, when he was inspired by the convocation address delivered by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at McGill University in June 1965. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in his address envisaged an institutional understanding and framework to endorse and carry forward academic and scholarly exchange and activity especially in the areas of humanities and social sciences. The encouragement and promotion of university level teaching and research on India in Canadian educational institutions was the basic and initial purpose of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. With its basic focus on the humanities and social sciences the Institute devised variant programmes awarding and funding fellowships and books and journals pertaining to India and India affairs to the libraries of the four founding Canadian member institutions of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute: McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto and National Library of Canada.

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute has its offices in Calgary and in Delhi. The foundation of current Delhi office was laid by the Late Prime Minister, Shri Rajiv Gandhi on 16 August, 1989.
