Lester Pearson Award

Lester Pearson Award for ‘Best Paper’

And

‘Best Doctoral Dissertation’ of the year

 

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is pleased to announce the launch of Lester Pearson Best Paper Award for Masters Students and Best Doctoral Dissertation of the year.

The initiative responds to Institute’s desire to develop and acknowledge community of young scholars/students that contributes to its growing body of research on matters of bi-national concern that directly impact the Canadian Republic, complementing Shastri Institute’s overall mission to promote and generate scholarship, exchange and learning of Ideas and dissemination of best public policy related to both India and Canada.

Proposed programme will encourage and engage the student community in India to create and/or sustain their interest in Canada through their experiences, understanding and research.

 

 

Lester Pearson Award for Best Paper

The Lester Pearson Award for best Paper is designed for students at the Master’s Degree level, to submit their best writings/ papers on Canada. There would be 3 prizes that would be offered for the best paper on the following themes, relating to Canada:

- Environment

- Trade and Commerce

- Aboriginals

 

Proposed programme will encourage and engage the student community in India to create and /or sustain their interest in Canada through their experiences, understanding and research.

 

Value of the Prize: INR 25,000 and a ‘Certificate of Merit’

 

Eligibility:

 

  1. Student must be currently enrolled as a regular student and pursuing Masters degree studies at a Indian Institution
  2. Student must be an Indian citizen or a permanent resident of India
  3. Paper submitted should not have been communicated earlier for any competitions/course or    graded

 

Eligible papers need to fulfill the following specifications:

 

a)     Original writing/Paper

b)     Between 6,000 to 10,000 words

c)     Double spaced

d)     12 point font (Times New Roman)

e)     MS Word or PDF file preferred

 

Application Submission requirement:

 

1. One Electronic copy of Paper submitted through email

2. One electronic copy of application (as per SICI format)

3. Proof of Indian citizenship or permanent resident status

4. Letter from HoD of the concerned department mentioning that the applicant is enrolled in the Masters degree course as a regular student

Best Doctoral Dissertation of the year

 

The Lester Pearson Award for best Doctoral Dissertation is designed to promote an outstanding and Innovative PhD thesis on a Canadian topic, written by a student enrolled in Indian university/Institution and which contributes to a better understanding of Canada.

 

Value of the Prize: INR50,000 and a ‘Certificate of Merit’

 

Eligibility:

 

  1. Student must have completed research from a recognized Indian University/Institution
  2. Student must be an Indian citizen or a permanent resident of India
  3. Submitted PhD thesis should be written in English/French, which has been successfully defended within the preceding two years
  4. The thesis must be a scholarly monograph dealing mainly with a Canadian topic
  5. Comparative works are eligible if the Canadian content is 50% or more

Application Submission requirement:

  1. Three paper copies or an electronic version of the thesis being submitted through email
  1. One electronic copy of application (as per SICI format)
  2. Proof of Indian citizenship or permanent resident status
  3. Application should be submitted by email to: LPA@sici.org.in with the subject-line “Application for Lester Pearson Best Doctoral Dissertation Award”. Applications sent to different email address will not be considered.
  1. A 15-20 page summary in French or English; in 12 point font (Times New Roman) in PDF
  2. Curriculum vitae of the author
  3. Letter of recommendation from the thesis Supervisor/Director
  4. List of three specialists (including address, university affiliation, e-mail, etc.) able to read and provide in French or English a detailed assessment of the work submitted

 

 

 

Evaluation Criterion for Awards:

 

An ‘adjudication committee’ will review submitted papers/thesis and shortlist at pre-selection stage. The final selection process would involve presentation of the writing/Paper on a date specified by SICI, and decision of the adjudication Committee after the presentation. Only shortlisted candidates would be invited for presentation. Institute will bear/arrange for basic logistical arrangements for invited student. The Papers/writings/Thesis would be evaluated using following criterion:

 

1. Critical understanding of Issue/topic

2. Originality, innovativeness and relevance

3. Presentations by applicants

 

Application deadline: 

 

Applications must arrive by 5.00 p.m. on November 1, 2012. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered. 

 

Announcement of results:

 

Results of the competition will be communicated by second week of December 2012. Only shortlisted and selected candidates will be contacted. The awarded papers/thesis may be considered for Shastri publication coming in the year 2012-13.
